Most people think that you only need to look after your hearing when you get older. That isn’t true. Your ears put up with a lot of noise from the day you’re born. Many of these will be safe, as the source should be relatively far away. When it comes to music and television, that often isn’t the case. That means paying attention to the volume.
Going above a certain level will have a detrimental impact on your ears and could lead to hearing loss. Few people know what a safe listening volume is, however. What is a safe listening volume, and exactly how loud is too loud? The key to protecting your hearing and not needing to visit an audiologist with some problems anytime soon is knowledge.
Protecting your ears from hearing loss shouldn’t be difficult, but you’ll need to keep a few things in mind.
Understanding Hazardous and Safe Listening Volumes
Music isn’t the only noise you’ll have to worry about. You’re surrounded by noise on a daily basis. Many will be relatively quiet while some will naturally be much louder.
Knowing what these noises are and whether you need to avoid them will be vital to this. With that, you could take protective measures against them.
There are different decibel ranges that you’ll need to be aware of. These are:
- 30dBs: Normal conversations are typically held at this level. You shouldn’t be worried about being exposed to this.
- 80-85dBs: Heavy traffic, lawnmowers, and air conditioners are usually within this range. While they don’t have to worry about this in short doses, they could cause problems if it’s a prolonged period.
- 90-95dBs: A motorcycle will be the most obvious example of this. Exposure of 50 minutes or longer could start causing hearing issues.
- 100dBs: An incoming train could best describe this sound. It can become harmful in about 15 minutes.
- 110dB: Speaking of a safe listening volume for music, this is far from it. Your earpods can typically go up this high, although it’s far from recommended. It’ll typically be the maximum level your earpods will go.
- 120dB or Over: Anything in this range should be avoided, as it can cause immediate hearing damage, which could be permanent.
You’ll naturally know to stay away from the source of many of these noises already. These will be the ones that are typically too difficult to listen to if you’re too close to them. If you know you’ll be in a position to hear such noises regularly, then take protective measures. The same is true for listening to music.
You should make sure it’s below the 85dB level at all times.
What is the Safest Listening Volume?
It’s generally recommended that you don’t expose your ears to sounds above 85 decibels. That number mightn’t make sense to some people. It also isn’t always apparent when you’re listening to something.
You’ll find that some songs and other sounds above 85dB can damage your ears you noticing too much at the start. You mightn’t even realize that damage is being done. You’ll want to avoid this. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can do so. The easiest and most efficient is to download an app onto your phone. These are quite simple to use and can tell you the exact decibel level.
Using that whenever you’re at a concert or listening to music is recommended. You can then either turn the music down or take other protective measures. If you’re at a concert, it could be worth bringing earplugs. These will let you hear the music without risking too much damage to your ears.
Your hearing should be more important than how loud the music is, after all.
Protect Yourself from Hearing Loss
One of the keys to protecting yourself from hearing loss is not exposing your ears to loud noises. While that’s relatively easy for most things, figuring things out when it comes to television shows and music can be difficult.
Once you know what a safe listening volume is, that shouldn’t be too difficult. Keeping it within a certain range will be a key factor in protecting yourself from hearing loss. You’ll often have to do more than that, however. Regular check-ups with an audiologist can be vital to making sure problems don’t develop.
