Loss of hearing due to repeated exposure to loud, concussive noise in everyday life has become a major hearing health problem. Complaints of hearing loss as people age is by far the most common complaint heard in the office at Audiology & Hearing Center of Tampa. There are other reasons for hearing loss, but damage from noise tops the list.
Hearing protection equipment ranges from simple to complex, from foam earplugs to advanced, valve-operated shooter’s earphones. We will look at some of the main categories of protection and their uses.
Earplugs are inserted in the ears to block or reduce sound waves coming into the ear canal from reaching the eardrum. Some earplugs double as protection from water while swimming and diving. Earplugs are the most portable, lightest solution for noise reduction.
Ear covers are used for more protection than earplugs. There are many styles and levels of protection in earphones. They are used in large part in loud construction or manufacturing environments, for specialties like shooting, and anywhere loud noise is the rule of the day.
Ear protectors with a special valve that closes during the sharp report of guns firing are called shooter’s earphones. Hunters use them so they can hear sounds from the surrounding landscape or other hunters but want the maximum ear protection when guns are fired.
A plastic mold of your outer ear forms the basis for custom ear protection products. Much like a mold is taken of the ear canal for small hearing aids, the earmold will carry ear protection plugs or act as earphones, which can be made smaller and lighter since they already fit your ears perfectly.
Musicians’ earplugs and monitors
A special category of hearing protection is the musicians’ monitor. In concert or in recording studios, musicians must hear all the notes and rhythms while being protected from the loudest sounds. Monitors and earplugs are designed to allow these musical frequencies to the eardrum.
Water sports can damage the structures of the ear. The best defense is to use a protection product designed to keep water out. Swimmers’ earplugs accomplish this while allowing a certain amount of sound through, depending on the density of the product.
